Ardha Ushtrasana (Half Camel Pose): Steps, Benefits & Precautions

Ardha Ushtrasana, also known as half camel pose, is a back-bending yoga pose that helps in stimulating several systems of human body. The name of the yoga pose comes from Sanskrit words: ardha (meaning half), ushtra (meaning camel) and asana (meaning pose or posture).

Know the steps of doing this yoga pose, how it can benefits your system and who shouldn’t be doing it.

How To Do Ardha Ushtrasana?

  • Kneel over a yoga mat placing your hands on hips
  • Keep your knees aligned with the shoulders and sole of feet should face the ceiling
  • Begin the inhalation process and take your tailbone toward the pubis as if it’s being pulled from navel
  • Bend your back and slowly bring your arms over your feet until the arms become straight
  • Stay in this neutral position for 10 seconds without straining your neck
  • Exhale and slowly get back to the initial pose
  • Take your hands back bringing them back to your hips while straightening up

Who Should Not Do This Pose?

  • Don’t do it if you have a spinal or knee injury
  • If you’ve had stomach surgery or hernia, neck/back injury or swelling, do not practice this yoga
